Whether or not the stuff REALLY hits the fan, I believe it makes sense to store provisions for the future for the simple reason that things are cheaper now than they'll be next month. And they'll be cheaper next month than they will next year. Price inflation is the unavoidable consequence of creating greater and greater debt.

The actions of other countries suddenly moving out of the US dollar as their reserve currency is a sign that those on the inside see a big crash coming. I'm a bit of a political liberal who's lived with such predictions from conservative and libertarian doom-mongering for decades. Still, I admire and enjoy this blog, even when I disagree with it, especially in its stated convictions to see things as they are, not as we wish them to be. Now, it's entirely possible that the long-anticipated total collapse of the dollar really is around the corner as of October 2013--I, like everyone, can't foresee the future-- but I'd hope that you have the honesty to admit at some point you were at least partially wrong if things at least don't get significantly worse in the future. But then, maybe they will this time.Caseyhttp://www.google.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1342380624800894371.post-13799209383574581182013-04-21T06:50:18.507-07:002013-04-21T06:50:18.507-07:00Actually, it's 3 years later...Actually, it's 3 years later...MTgunfighterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05985092048056869700noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1342380624800894371.post-5377330154870788362013-04-21T06:44:49.739-07:002013-04-21T06:44:49.739-07:00Looking back at this, 2 years later, the dollar ha...Looking back at this, 2 years later, the dollar hasn't collapsed, yet. There is, currently, a run on gold (mostly speculators, I think). An alternative currency–Bitcoin–has emerged and is selling at commodity prices. (I have long predicted a parallel currency that cannot manipulated by the Federal Reserve and cannot be seized by the US government. Bitcoin, for now, is that currency and the government and the banks are going nuts because they can't exploit it.)

I don't know if the dollar will collapse, now, any more than it would have in 2010. There several things that will be of greater value than either gold or silver–medications and non-electronic manufactured goods, for example. You can't eat gold or use it to treat your high blood pressure. What's more precious, the ability to treat your child with amoxicillin when they are dying, or a bar of gold? Gold is only valuable because people think it is valuable and, like all artificially created bubbles, the current bubble will crash and crash hard when people realize you can't eat it.

Good post...MTgunfighterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05985092048056869700noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1342380624800894371.post-61747540023282478662013-03-02T03:44:23.270-08:002013-03-02T03:44:23.270-08:00The Lord also tells us that if we are prepared, we...The Lord also tells us that if we are prepared, we need not fear. I've been pondering when and where "food storage" came to be a near doctrine of the church, especially when Christ does command so in Matt 6. I spend way too much money, even going into debt, because I thought I needed to stockpile at all costs to be prepared. Then I re-learned that God provided manna to the Israelites, and tells me in scripture not to take thought. I'm not sure how literal I'm supposed to take that, because we sure spend a lot of thought just figuring out what to eat for dinner each night. Interesting discussion, if anything. :)jenheadjenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07729691287229935563noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1342380624800894371.post-49349734493306541722013-02-18T00:30:05.001-08:002013-02-18T00:30:05.001-08:00Jack Mormon, I guess you haven't figured out t...Jack Mormon, I guess you haven't figured out that Insana Dee engages in parody, hyperbole, and satire in her comments on this site. It appears to me to be a commandment for the saints who rely too much on the arm of flesh.
Matthew chapter 6 tells us to take no thought for what we should eat, or drink or wear. It tells us to have complete confidence in the Lord to provide for our needs. I try to follow that teaching so food storage has never been very high on my agenda.

I also feel it is morally wrong, for me at least, to stockpile food when many millions of my brothers and sisters on various parts of the world are starving to death (probably because they don't know about Matt. 6). My attention span is fairly short but for those hungry for 30+ year old red wheat in number ten cans, some ancient rice, lima beans or some other stuff that may or may not be edible, a five gallon bucket of syrup that has never been opened but is probably a solid chunk of resin to marvel the hardest glop of tree sap (void the prehistoric mosquito encased in amber), some really nasty pwd. milk that doesn't dissolve and floats like white chummy sewage on top of the cereal, some pear flakes that when re-constituted look like what my dog expelled after eating some old sheep intestines we found on a walk, some separated very rancid peanut butter that is powder dry on bottom and fetid on top, and other sorts of really expired Sam Andy food storage, then give me a call.

We inherited it from someone 25 years ago and it was a couple decades old then and had been in some hot garage in Ventura County till the labels all dried up and fell off. We hauled and stacked it and stored it in our garage and then moved it to Utah and stored it again. Then the shed caved in and some of the plastic buckets that had been sitting on each other for years split down the sides. The mice got in and had a field day. Then blow snakes found out the boon of mice and we suddenly had blow snakes coming out the wazoo (not as fun as it sounds).

So if anyone wants this stuff, it's vintage, nearly heirloom quality. It's all yours if you'll haul it away. I'm taking my chances with food stamps when I get old. Just kidding. I have my food storage around my middle.
